How many orcs attacked minas tirith
The Witch-king retreats for the time being. Merry and Pippin are reunited in the fracas. As the fight progresses for days, the Dawnless Day arrives, overshadowing the field. Merry swears revenge. Due to the film not having time for the healing-house scenes they are not rendered ill.
The Mordor troops panic and start scattering, some throwing themselves into the river. Then the black fleet arrives, giving them fresh hope, only to dash it when the flagship raises not the standard of Mordor but the standard of the King of Gondor. They are thrown into complete disarray at this point and mopped up by the joint Rohan and Gondor forces.
Aragorn and Gandalf then prepare for the march on the Black Gate. On the second day of the battle, with the forces of Gondor on the brink of defeat, the Rohirrim, with 6, fully armed horsemen, arrived at daybreak fresh and ready. The orcs hastily reorganised themselves, setting up their pikemen in front and their archers behind them. As the Rohirrim closed in, the orcs opened fire with three volleys of arrows, killing several of the horsemen but it was all for naught as the barrage had little effect on the Rohirrim's momentum.
The Orc Chief could only look on in horror as the Rohirrim smashed headlong into the orc ranks with all the power and fury of a force ten times their actual size, slicing through and mowing down thousands of the panicking orcs with shocking ease. The orc lines buckled, splintered and then shattered completely, causing them to rout the field; yet the Rohirrim pursued them still, slaughtering the orcs by the hundreds.
Spotting an opening, the Witch-King reversed his attack direction and countered with a devastating blow from his mace, shattering her shield and breaking all the bones in her arm. Back inside the walls of Minas Tirith, the forces of Gondor prepared to make their last stand against the encroaching orcs.
Out on the Pelennor fields, the Rohirrim continued to fight hard but were still heavily outnumbered and assailed from all sides. Then, just as defeat seemed imminent for Gondor and Rohan, the ships of the Corsairs of Umbar arrived on the river bank. A detachment of orcs arrived to join up with them but were instead greeted by the sight of Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli jumping off the lead ship. The trio then charged the orc ranks, followed immediately by the forces of the Dead Men of Dunharrow, who poured onto the field butchering every orc and Haradrim in their path before flooding into the city itself and massacring every orc within.
The remaining orcs and Haradrim stood no chance against the dead and were quickly slaughtered. At the Black Gate, the Mouth of Sauron says 'The rabble of Gondor and its deluded allies shall withdraw at once beyond the Anduin', clearly giving precedence to Gondor. Imrahil takes 3, men to the Black Gate, whereas Eomer takes 1, Therefore it is overwhelmingly likely that Gondor had the larger army, even before Aragorn arrived.
Moving on to the battle itself, Minas Tirith initially is beseiged by the orc legions from Minas Morgul. The orcs are then attacked in the rear by Theoden's army. After the Witch King kills Theoden, Eomer leads the Rohirrim agains the army of the Haradrim, which outnumbers his forces by , so they have about 18, At the same time, the forces of Gondor push out of the City, sending their cavalry to help Eomer, whilst their footsoldiers engage the remaining orcs. At this point, the lieutenant of Morgul Gothmog throws in all of his reserves.
Here is the key quote from The Battle of the Pelennor Fields:. Emphasis mine. So, 6, Rohirrim and whatever forces were inside Minas Tirith were enough to bring about a finely poised battle against 18, Haradrim and the Legions of Morgul.
This doesn't give us a clear figure, but it is enough to show that there must have been , men defending Minas Tirith, before Theoden or Aragorn arrived. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.

Ask Question. Asked 6 years, 5 months ago. Active 4 years, 11 months ago. Tolkien was no stranger to this process and, is, in fact, the best at it of all epic fantasy writers. The Battle of Pelennor Fields combines so many elements of Medieval and Early Modern warfare that it is both distinct in its epic heroism and poignancy, but also familiar to the eye of the historian.

Thorondor it was in the film The shock of K calvary charging the flank of the Mordor host was quite a signifigant event in the battle of Peleanor Fields.
Their were between , to , orcs. And an estimated thousand Gondar soldiers. Cynethryth Isnt that nearly exactly what we said? And we were mostly referring to the numbers in the book - where there are "only" warriors for Mordor. And I do not think it's the best beginning for a post to say "You people know nothing" - that might not be taken in a friendly way.
Discos in the 2nd disc of return of the king peter jackson explained that near a million orcs were supposed to be there Cynethryth Discos perhaps I am mistaking, it is either PJ who said a million at Pellenor, or it could havebeen the narrator to the national geographic documentary either way when Denethor looked down onto the Pellenor Fields it looked sure as shit more than , Agent Elrond Some some reason, the numbers always change at Pelennor Fields. Let's just say there were a crap load of orcs, Uruks, haradrum, easterling at Gondor Ddraiglais First of all for telecontari, we know nothing?
Where are you getting your numbers from? There were 40,, for Mordor and her allies. Gondor had just over 11, These are numbers from "The Atlas of Middle Earth".
It was written by experts in geography and demography. I'd say they knew something. And yes Mordor had in the hundred thousands, but they were back in Mordor or attacking other fortresses in ME Rivendell, Lolthlorien, Rohan, etc.
For those of you who think there were hundreds of thousands or even millions of troops at Pelennor Fields, all I have to say is read a book. PJ totally screwed up putting the books to film. He missed so many things and then added a bunch of crap. The visuals were excellent, but the story is changed. I am so tired of all you "experts" out there who have seen three movies and never read one word that Tolkien wrote.
I suggest to anyone who wants to speak with any kind of authority and knowledge on the subject, read the books before you come online claiming this and that. Adam Cynethryth Great post Yep, they're the same Tolkien himself also gives.
